History of the week: Edgar Allan Poe

Most of you probably don't know him...Edgar Allan Poe was a dark figure in the history of poetry. His face might remind something to you. He is the logo on a top from Fallen Angel. The reason why the creators chose to place his face on a top from that shop instead of any else (like IT Girls for example) is that just like Fallen Angel, Poe represents the gothic style in some way. Poe was one of the strongest contributors in the American Romantic Movement.

He had a really difficult life and maybe that is what caused him to have that dark mentality but the true source of his inspirations is still unknown and is unlikely to ever be. The reason why his work is referred to as gothic and dark is that he believed that people are tethered with death and life is a short period of light that goes away and the only way for people to actually live is death. It's difficult to understand his beliefs and that is the main reason he is not as well known as other poets. Therefore, he has said and written many wise and deep things that still remain important. Some of them are the following.

"There is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness in the proportion"
"Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by
  night."
